In the countryside, night-life means something very different than the city. Grab some of our flashlights, and join our guide on a stroll through the jungle after dark searching for incredible nocturnal animals and insects. You know that bright green yellowish tree from with big red eyes you see on all the souvenirs? We call it la ojo rojo, and you’re bound to find one on this tour. While it might seem crazy to go on a search for wildlife at night, trust us! In the day, it can get hot here even for the animals. As a result, lots of wildlife waits until nightfall to look for food, so that they can conserve energy. You will learn all about that and more as you follow our guide on an easy-going walk down our hiking trails.

Flashlights will be provided, and we are happy to make accommodations to support kids who might be a little afraid of the dark. One of our favorite moments of the tour is asking all the participants to turn off the lights, and just listen to the sounds of the jungle, finding the wildlife with our ears. If you think this might be too much for your little ones, please just talk to the guide before hand! He’s a pro, and has tons of experience with his own nieces and nephews. He’ll make sure the experience is a positive one for your whole family.

TOUR OVERVIEW

Take advantage of our serene location out in the Costa Rican countryside, far away from the noises of town-life, and join us for an amazing bird watching experience. Our guide will lead you walking out from the hotel grounds on an easy-going stroll down secluded paths that are beautiful and accessible to all (the paths are mostly flat and not strenuous). Along the way, we will teach you about the flora and fauna present in the surrounding area, answer your questions, and show you how to sight birds through our guide-provided telescope and binoculars. Who knows, we might even find one of the sloth families that are our neighbors!

We are happy and flexible to schedule this whenever in the day you would like, but our expert recommendation is to go bird-watching either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. These are the two times of day the birds are out eating, and more of their activity means more to spot for us.

Especially for those who visit La Fortuna with limited time, or for those who want to do it all, we have designed this in combo, to allow you to visit the most important attractions around the area. Our incredible Arenal Volcano are not to be missed, so we start the adventure at the Arenal Volcano National Park to hike through 4 km (2.5 miles) trail called “Lava Slides of 1992” which will take us as close to the Mighty Arenal as possible without risking your safety. From there, if the skies are clear, the views of the Arenal Lake, the secondary forest, and the areas devastated by previous eruptions will be impressive.

At around 11:30, we will arrive at the second place of interest, La Fortuna Waterfall, famous for its height of 70 meters (230 feet). There you can take a refreshing swim in its cool waters or take pictures of its beauty. Afterwards, around 1:00 pm we will stop at a restaurant near downtown La Fortuna for a delicious a la carte lunch with 5 options to choose from.

Later, at 2:30 pm, we will head to the Arenal Hanging Bridges, to hike through the 3.1 km (1.92 miles) trail circuit high above the tree canopy, and across a circuit of 15 impressive hanging and stationary bridges trying to find wildlife as our main objective

In the evening, we will make our last stop at the hot springs of your choice. Choose the hot springs of your preference, with or without dinner at the time of reservation. You can enjoy the springs from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, then we will pick you up and take you back to your hotel in our modern minivans

Experience Arenal´s only wild frog sanctuary, at night, when colorful tree frogs, and other rainforest wildlife, are most active and most easily observed. At least 28 frog species have made the ponds of Arenal Oasis home. The Rojas Bonilla family carefully maintains native plants of Arenal to create needed frog habitat in this private wildlife reserve of fresh water spring fed ponds within a rainforest refuge connecting the rainforests of the Arenal Volcano and El Rio Burio.

The walk continues past the frog ponds along flat trails immersed in the noisy night rainforest. The guide will point out animals hiding from you.

Depending on your choice we start the adventure at Arenal Volcano National Park to hike through 4 km (2.5 miles) trail called “Lava Slides of 1992” which will take us as close to the Mighty Arenal as possible without risking your safety. From there, if the skies are clear, the views of the Arenal Lake, the secondary forest, and the areas devastated by previous eruptions will be impressive but if your choice was the Hanging Bridges we will go to Mistico Park where we will go for 2 miles Hike and with some luck, we will be able to see: howler monkeys, spider monkeys, white faced cappuccino monkeys, Lots of birds, snakes, armadillos, coatis, and other animals or; After our hike on the rain forest we will continue our journey to La Fortuna Waterfall a beautiful place with a lot of vegetation around it, once there we will hike down (500 steps with some resting areas) to the waterfall base to go for a swim On the cool pristine waters of La Fortuna river, after all this exercise you will be hungry so we will take to a nice restaurant near by to enjoy a delicious lunch.

The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is located near the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua and is one of the most important wetlands of the country. It was declared of worldwide importance due to the quantity of migratory birds which frequent it and their protection of species in danger of extinction, receiving the category RAMSAR. Just outside of the Refuge lies the Rio Frio, or Cold River, which is the main water source for the refuge, breathing life into this magical area. Here you have a great possibility of observing animals and navigation ensuring all year long.

With a scheduled departure from La Fortuna at 7:30 am, we will drive through the San Carlos flat lands for 2 hours until we reach the small village of Los Chiles, observing a large variety of traditional crops like pineapple and sugar cane along the way, in addition to large cattle farms.

From here we will head to Rio Frio to boat the comfortable motorboat with ample visibility, covered in case of rain, and with lifejackets. The boat is driven by one of our experienced captains.

Together with our Naturalist Guide we will travel along the river for about 2 hours in search of monkeys, herons, sloths, caiman, turtles, and hundreds of other species of flora and fauna that inhabit the area around the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.

Afterwards, we will stop for a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, before heading back to La Fortuna in our comfortable air-conditioned minivan with free WiFi

TOUR OVERVIEW

The tour begins at 2:30 pm from your hotel’s lobby, in order to reach El Silencio Private Reserve at 3:00 pm, to reach as close to the Arenal Volcano as permitted by car. From there, we will begin a 1 km walk along a trail of volcanic rock, rated as moderate in difficulty, to reach the observation point, which is the closest to the base of the volcano we can legally get. At the observation point, your guide will provide interesting information regarding the formation of the Arenal Volcano, its periods of activity, and unedited details of its major eruption in 1968, as well as giving you the opportunity to enjoy the incredible views of the Arenal Volcano and the Arenal Lake. Afterwards, we will begin our return trip down the same trail to the starting point.
For the next stage of the expedition, we will change scenery and enter into the regenerating forest and small area of primary rainforest found at the base of the Arenal Volcano. This trail is about 1.5 km, in length, and with a little luck, you will have the opportunity to discover a large variety of flora and fauna, including toucans, wild turkeys, orioles, wild boars, snakes, and monkeys.
After the trails, your driver will be waiting for you, with a delicious snack of tropical fruit, and then returning to hot springs of your choice for an approximately 3 hours, where you will enjoy a great dinner at de hot springs restaurant. After giving you time to enjoy these natural thermal waters, we will return to pick you up in our modern mini-vans to take you to your hotel.

TOUR OVERVIEW

This tour is ideal for those who want to take advantage of their nights in Costa Rica to discover some of the country’s nocturnal wonders. We will begin our tour in the small town of La Tigra, located just 30 minutes from La Fortuna. Here, you will meet the Mendez Family, a local family dedicated to farming which has also devoted part of their land to the natural regeneration of plants and animals. Once we arrive, we will take the trail of 600 meters (0.37 miles) in to a small patch of reforested rainforest with some mirrored lakes, which facilitate wildlife observation. You can expect to see a variety of nocturnal birds and mammals, insects, amphibians, bats, and more.

The trail will take us around the mirrored lakes to the frog sanctuary, which is an area dedicated to the regeneration and natural reproduction of frog species. Here you will discover countless species such as the dart frog and the bull frog, the smallest and largest species in Costa Rica, as well as the spectacular Red Eyed Tree Frog, and the beautiful Glass Frog. After the tour, a delicious Costa Rican dinner prepared on a wood burning stove will await us. We will enjoy our dinner viewing the lights of the valleys of San Carlos, before returning to your hotel in La Fortuna.
